The collaboration between Teesside University and Transform Healthcare Cambodia (THC) has successfully facilitated the students to undertake placements at Battambang Provincial Referral Hospital and Roka Community Hospital in Cambodia.
Teesside University's School of Health & Life Sciences provided funding for the mobility programme which has been bridging educational gaps in Southeast Asian healthcare communities since 2016.
These programmes provide invaluable international healthcare experience to students during their second year of pre-registration training.
Each student placement lasted approximately 18 days and counted towards the requirements for students to be registered with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC).
‘The experience exemplified the importance of learning from different perspectives and cultures’, said Beth Edgerly (from the November 2024 cohort). ‘The NHS welcomes many international professionals, so it was valuable to gain more experience working with people from various backgrounds and cultures.’
The programme has garnered high-level diplomatic attention, with British Ambassador to Cambodia, Dominic Williams, travelling five hours from Phnom Penh to Battambang in July 2024 to observe the students' work firsthand after previously hosting the team at his official residence in 2023.
The value of these trips as perceived by our Cambodian colleagues cannot be overstated.
Graham Patrick Jones, Senior Lecturer in the School of Health & Life Sciences at Teesside University, who helps facilitate the programme, said: ‘The benefits for our students working in the Cambodian healthcare system are multiple. Students develop leadership skills, communication skills, and an appreciation of cultural diversity and multiculturalism.
‘The value of these trips as perceived by our Cambodian colleagues cannot be overstated.
‘They repeatedly express the benefits of the mutual collaboration in terms of education and knowledge exchange.’
Dr Ann French, Dean of the School of Health and Life Sciences, said: ‘This placement equips our students with essential knowledge, skills, attitudes, and dispositions that enable them to realise their potential and make a positive contribution to our world.’
