Teesside University students prepare to volunteer at Battambang Hospital in Cambodia

27 June 2018

Student nurses from School of Health & Social Care have been working with Transform Healthcare Cambodia, volunteering at Battambang Hospital, Cambodia. The charity sends a team of healthcare professionals to Cambodia twice a year, in February and November.

Since 2015, student nurses from School of Health & Social Care have been working with Transform Healthcare Cambodia, volunteering at Battambang Hospital, Cambodia.

The charity sends a team of healthcare professionals to Cambodia twice a year, and 16 students will be travelling to Cambodia this month. Students and staff fund the trip themselves and have been engaging in various fund raising activities for their next trip.

The benefits in terms of personal and professional development for the volunteering students are immeasurable. Students experience a healthcare system that is extremely under resourced and in it's infancy; developing their communication, leadership and managements skills, and gain an elevated cultural awareness by engaging in a different environment to the National Health Service in the UK.

Graham Jones, Lecturer in Nursing Skills at Teesside University, and board member of the charity Transform Healthcare Cambodia said:

“Our students have done a fantastic job for the charity and the University, they have each been extremely professional, courteous and culturally aware and I am extremely proud of them.”

Since the first student visit in 2016, Graham Jones and the volunteering students shared their experience at two prestigious nursing conferences in the UK, The Chief Nursing Officers Summit, and Foundation Trust International Nurses Day Conference.

Students that volunteered previously have stated that the visit has been a life-changing experience, and one that has developed a global perspective of the healthcare profession.
