Brazilian conference

14 July 2019

Contamination of groundwater in Brazil was the focus of a conference organised by Dr Tannaz Pak, Senior Lecturer in Petroleum Engineering in the University’s School of Science, Engineering & Design.

The GRUN (Groundwater Remediation using Nano/biotechnology with focus on the Contaminated Resources in Brazil) conference took place at the Brazilian Synchrotron in Campinas, Brazil on June 24 and 25.

Professor Stephen Cummings, Dean of the School of Science, Engineering & Design, was also involved in organising the event, which involved around 70 delegates, including speakers from the Czech Republic and Italy. The conference was sponsored by the Global Challenges Research Fund (UKRI).

It was a very successful event which opened new avenues for future collaborations

Dr Tannaz Pak

Dr Pak said: 'This event was the first conference focused on the subject of groundwater remediation using nanotechnology in Brazil. It was held in the state of Sao Paulo which has some significant levels of contamination in its groundwater systems that directly supply drinking water to the residents of this state. It was a very successful event which opened new avenues for future collaborations.'
