The centre will reimagine learning experiences through world-class research, interdisciplinary collaboration and evidence-based practice on digital technologies and responsible artificial intelligence.
Its mission is to create connected, personalised, ethical and future-ready learning environments that enhance student success, educational inclusion and societal impact.
Students, including doctoral and postgraduate researchers, will play an active role as collaborators.
The centre will also enhance the University’s Future Facing Learning & AI in Higher Education Research Conference as a leading international platform for innovation.
It will be co-led by Professor Chrisina Jayne, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Global Engagement & Partnerships), Associate Professor Dr Ann Thanaraj, Head of Digital and AI Innovations, and Paul Durston, Digital Innovation Manager, who will work alongside a growing interdisciplinary community of researchers, academics and industry partners.

Associate Professor Dr Ann Thanaraj added: “Artificial intelligence is transforming education globally. Our centre is focused not only on technological advancement, but on ensuring AI is implemented ethically, inclusively and in ways that genuinely enhance student learning, staff practice and educational opportunity.”
Paul Durston, Digital Innovation Manager, said: “This initiative creates an exciting opportunity to bring together academia, edtech and industry to shape responsible and innovative approaches to AI in education that benefit students, educators and society.”
Academics, industry partners and collaborators from across the UK attended the launch event, which took place at the University’s Middlesbrough campus on Friday 26 June. A second event will take place on Friday 11 September at Teesside University London.
