Sophie, 22, from Middlesbrough, who has secured a role as social media executive with Barker and Stonehouse, graduates from BA (Hons) Marketing.

Having initially started out on a different path, she changed direction to switch to Teesside and a course that allowed her to turn her passion for creativity and ideas into a career.

She said: “Back in sixth?form college, I didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do. I took Spanish, drama, and English literature, and all I knew was that I was passionate about being creative and generating ideas. It wasn't until my first year at a different university that I realised marketing was the perfect path to channel that creativity into a career.

“I originally started a degree at another university, thinking it was a ‘better’ choice, but I soon learned that often that is not the case for every degree. The hands-on level of learning and the sheer commitment from the staff at Teesside is incomparable.

“What I enjoyed most about my degree was definitely the practical aspect and getting real, hands-on experience. Taking part in the annual Greggs challenge was an absolute highlight. It’s such a fun project, and winning it made it even better.”

Sophie added: “During my second year, I secured a placement position with my now employer. That experience paved the way for where I am now, transitioning straight into a graduate role with them.?

“I have to admit, my favourite part of the day at Teesside University was always the food, no one talks about how good it actually is. Beyond that, I worked as a student content creator, working with the University’s in-house marketing team. It was a brilliant programme to be part of, as it allowed me to earn extra cash while boosting my CV with relevant experience.”

Sophie added: “It’s hard to pick just one singular thing that I most enjoyed, but it has to be the lecturers' approach to the course. They are so passionate about their students and truly want us to excel.

“I’d say to anyone thinking of applying to Teesside to just go for it. Make sure you research your modules thoroughly, so you know what to expect, and make the most of every single moment.”
