Olivia, 28, and mum Vicki, 50, both from Hartlepool, graduated from the BSc (Hons) Forensic Psychology. They are both now aiming to pursue careers in this field, with plans to continue their academic journey with postgraduate studies.

Alongside her studies, Olivia is currently work as a Teaching Assistant/Cover Supervisor, while also gaining relevant experience through volunteering at a prison and with drug and alcohol support services to broaden her understanding of supporting people from a range of backgrounds.

She is planning to continue to the MSc Forensic Psychology, with the long-term goal of becoming a forensic psychologist.

Vicki will also be returning to Teesside to study the MSc Criminal Investigation, allowing her to build on the knowledge and skills gained during her undergraduate degree.

Olivia said: “As local students, Teesside University offered an excellent reputation, fantastic facilities and a supportive learning environment close to home.

“The forensic psychology course stood out to us both because of its strong focus on applying psychological theory to real-world settings, particularly within the criminal justice system, which matched our interests and career aspirations.”

Olivia added: “The degree provided us with valuable knowledge, practical skills and confidence that will help us both progress professionally. I was able to balance studying alongside work, volunteering and family life throughout the degree, and it has opened the door to graduate opportunities. My current roles and volunteering have been invaluable in developing the practical experience needed to pursue a career in psychology.”

Vicki said: “Graduating together was incredibly special and something we will both treasure forever. Sharing such a significant achievement as mother and daughter made the day even more meaningful. We supported each other through every challenge, so celebrating together at graduation was a very proud and emotional moment for our family.”

Olivia added: “Studying together gave us a unique support system. We were able to encourage one another through assignments, exams and deadlines, celebrate each other’s successes and motivate each other when things became challenging. Having someone at home who truly understood the demands of university made a huge difference, and we believe it strengthened both our relationship and our determination to succeed.”

Vicki added: “Our time at Teesside University has been incredibly rewarding. The lecturers were supportive, approachable and genuinely invested in helping us succeed. We have both grown in confidence, developed valuable skills and made memories that will stay with us for life.

“Graduating together has shown us that it is never too late to challenge yourself, and we hope our story encourages others to pursue their goals regardless of their stage in life. We are proud to continue our journeys together and are excited to see where the future takes us.”
