Jenny Worth, 22, from Hartlepool, and Matthew Conroy 23, from Liverpool, met while studying on the MSci (Hons) Chiropractic. They were both among graduates celebrating academic success at Teesside University’s summer graduation ceremonies.
Jenny said: “I did gymnastics when I was younger and have coached little ones since I was 15 so I was always interested in sport and the body. I came across chiropractic when researching healthcare careers online and I really liked how chiropractors were able to help with musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction without using pharmaceuticals.
“I was lucky that I live close to Teesside University and they had a course I was really interested in.”
Matthew said: “I’ve been seeing a chiropractor all my life since I was a few days old and it's had a huge positive impact on my wellbeing particularly while playing multiple sports and recovering from injuries.
“It felt like the right career path for me because I was really interested in how the body works. I’ve wanted to be a chiropractor since I was young as I loved visiting the clinic and seeing the difference it can make.
“After going to open days at multiple universities offering chiropractic, I really liked the campus and the lecturers from the chiropractic course at Teesside.”
Jenny added: “We met in our first year on the course. We got to know each other after we were put in the same group for a presentation within the first few weeks of starting university. Studying together has been a huge advantage as we’ve been able to support each other through exams, essays and placements.
“We spent a lot of time together practicing for our Objective Structured Clinical Examination, the practical exams that healthcare students do to assess clinical skills. We’ve enjoyed going through the same experiences and are grateful that we get to graduate together.
“We enjoyed the practical elements of our course where we learned a range of chiropractic techniques and adjustments. One of the highlights was our fourth year working in the student clinic, where we were able to treat our own patients and put everything we had learnt into practice.”
The couple are now in the process of setting up their own chiropractic clinic together in Formby, Liverpool.
Jenny said: “The course has given us the clinical knowledge, practical skills and confidence to be able to take this step and our experience in the student clinic was very valuable in preparing us for it.
“Meeting each other and making lifelong friends has been a huge part of our university experience. We also loved seeing our patients improve through treatment we provided in the student clinic. The support from our tutors and lecturers also made a big impact and helped us grow professionally.
“Teesside has a welcoming campus with great facilities and supportive staff. The chiropractic course has given us plenty of experience and opportunities to develop our clinical skills. We would highly recommend Teesside University to anyone considering a career in healthcare.”
