Why Teesside?

I wanted to go to a university with like-minded people and to push the boundaries of my own art practice. I knew returning to university as a mature student would inspire me and enable me to look to my own future in a very different way. Teesside is my local university and the programme intrigued me. MA Fine Art was a way for me to broaden my understanding and practice further.

favourite part of your course?

I particularly enjoyed the wider aspects of the course, discovering and experimenting with ideas that had been inspired from discussed debates. Post Studio Art: Interrupt was a module that really changed my thinking and approach to my art, and the purpose of why I create art.

How are the facilities and services?

The facilities are superb and extremely accessible - working late at night or weekends was not a problem. The expertise and knowledge of staff is second to none but, more than that, there is a real sense of belonging and great support no matter where you are on campus.

What else did you learn at Teesside?

Confidence. As an artist having the belief that your work is meaningful is paramount. I’ve learned that I can make a difference in people’s lives through my practice. Look around the subject you’re interested in. My course was great but the real value of being at university was everything I discovered and experienced.

Would you recommend Teesside?

The University is constantly changing and there is lots available for students. But, for the enterprising student, there is far more than just your own course - funding for projects, business start-up support, and networking opportunities.

What are your plans after graduating?

To continue as an artist, no easy task! I also wish to grow the artist collective I set up while at the University and to franchise and grow my telephone box project – once it is an established business. I applied to Microbiz as part of a business start-up programme for students. Through that I have set up a small business supporting artists. I’ve also applied to Launchpad EUL for business growth with a different business idea.
