Tamsyn is thoroughly enjoying her course and is developing extra skills through her part-time work as a student ambassador.
I decided to go to university to broaden my horizons and gain a more hands on role in dentistry.
Prior to applying for university, I completed a traineeship in dental nursing and subsequently completed a course to become an oral health educator. Going to university to further advance my dentistry skills was the next step.
I applied to Teesside University after visiting the campus on an open day. I was amazed with the student dental facilities available. The campus felt extremely welcoming and I was impressed with the student accommodation available.
I would 100% recommend Teesside University. The University is such a positive environment with amazing facilities throughout the campus. The staff are knowledgeable and passionate and use a variety of different teaching methods to engage students.
My inspiration to pursue a career as a dental therapist was sparked during the process of my own orthodontic treatment. I realised how fascinating and life changing this preventative course of action can be, transforming personal appearances and providing the patient with many health benefits, managing and promoting oral healthcare.
Teesside’s BSc (Hons) Dental Hygiene and Dental Therapy enables you to train as a practitioner, giving you invaluable skills, refining your manual dexterity and emphasising the importance of the NHS 6Cs (care, compassion, competence, courage, commitment and communication).
I don’t know where to begin! The practical sessions on the Phantom Head Skills Lab are extremely interesting and it is great to gain the knowledge and skills prior to progressing onto the Student Dental Facility, where you apply your knowledge with the guided assistance of your clinical supervisors.
The course is 50% theory and 50% practise. A module which I particularly enjoyed was the Introduction to Dental Anatomy and Oral Disease, I became engrossed with this topic and found myself reading around the subject significantly. All of the lecturers are extremely passionate in what they do and this is shown during their presentations.
Yes – I am a Teesside University student ambassador. This job offers amazing opportunities and is very flexible, especially around my current studies. I have worked at several open days, helping many prospective students and telling them about the University and the courses available at Teesside. I’ve also visited several schools, promoting the idea of progressing to university to pupils. I would definitely advise new students to consider applying to become a student ambassador. It’s a rewarding job as well as being a brilliant way to meet new people.
As well as working, I’m a member of the University’s gym which offers a range of exercise classes. One of my favourites is freestyle fitness yoga.
I am currently the undergraduate representative for the British Society of Periodontology. I have also volunteered at several events including International Day of the Midwife, providing oral hygiene advice to new mothers and mothers to be.
The knowledge I have gained in lectures, alongside the development of my hygiene and restorative skills has placed me in great stead for a career as a dental hygienist and dental therapist.
The lecturers and clinical supervisors are always willing to go the extra mile to help further your understanding and strengthen your skills.
In the future I would love to specialise in community dental services as I feel this role would be extremely rewarding. I plan to continue my professional development once I graduate by undergoing courses such as sedation to enhance my skills further.
