Why university and why Teesside?

After working as a digital marketer and creative designer for around five years, I decided to deepen my understanding of how digital marketing is evolving alongside new technologies. Studying in the UK was a goal of mine, as it’s a global hub for digital innovation within the service and creative industries. Teesside University stood out because of its strong focus on practical learning, modern infrastructure and industry-relevant modules that aligned perfectly with my career goals.

Why digital marketing?

The course is well structured and places strong emphasis on applying theory in real-world contexts. It has an excellent graduate employment rate, which reflects its relevance to industry needs. The modules cover everything from digital communication strategies to performance optimisation, helping me develop a more analytical and strategic approach to marketing decision-making.

Best thing about your course?

I like how interactive and discussion-driven it is. The seminars and group activities encourage critical thinking and practical problem-solving. I particularly enjoyed the Digital Communications module, which explored different platforms to engage with audiences, analyse performance and refine strategies. It helped me understand how to evaluate campaigns in a structured and insightful way.

Thoughts on the campus and services?

The campus is modern, welcoming and very student-focused. The Library has excellent digital and physical resources, which are extremely helpful for research and independent study. The careers service provides valuable guidance on employability, CV writing and insights on the industry, while the Students’ Union creates a supportive and inclusive environment that makes it easy to feel part of the university community.

Thoughts on Middlesbrough and the surrounding area?

Middlesbrough is a friendly and affordable town, with a strong sense of community and a good balance between urban life and quieter spaces. Nature and the coast are easily accessible, providing a refreshing break from academic life.

Any extracurricular roles?

I’m a member of the Postgraduate Society, which provides a relaxed and supportive space where postgraduate students discuss academic life, career plans and opportunities across different societies. There’s also a social side, with quizzes and catch-ups over coffee. It’s helped me build connections and feel part of the wider university community.

Tell us about projects you’ve worked on?

I’ve worked on practical marketing projects that simulate real business challenges. These involved analysing digital performance, developing strategies, and presenting solutions, which closely reflect the expectations of working with real clients and organisations.

Have you done any volunteering during your studies?

I secured a volunteer role with Neuro Key through the University’s volunteering platform, Volun-tees. Neuro Key is an alliance that supports people with neurological conditions and my role is a media, website and admin volunteer.

What skills have you gained?

I’ve strengthened my analytical thinking, strategic planning and research skills, and gained confidence in presenting ideas, working in teams and using data to support marketing decisions. I’ve become more independent, adaptable, confident, improved my communication skills and broadened my perspective. These skills are essential for building a long-term career in digital marketing.

Would you recommend Teesside and your course?
