Job title

Apprentice operating department practitioner (ODP) at Nuffield Health

Why Teesside?

My employer chose this apprenticeship at Teesside University due to its excellent reputation for healthcare training and clear understanding of how apprenticeships function in practice. The course structure integrates seamlessly with clinical roles, ensuring theory links directly to my day-to-day responsibilities in the operating theatre.

How have you found your apprenticeship?

I have thoroughly enjoyed it so far – it has remained academically engaging throughout, which is impressive given the challenges of a fully online delivery. The curriculum is perfectly tailored to our clinical roles and has significantly aided my professional development over the last three years.

I particularly valued the on-campus week – the practical skills I gained have been invaluable during my placements. This course has truly enhanced my practice as an ODP. I have gained a depth of knowledge that will be vital once I’m fully qualified. We are empowered to find our voice as students and make a meaningful difference, which is a crucial skill in a clinical environment.

What skills have you gained that support your day-to-day role?

I’ve developed a wide range of skills that I apply to my daily practice. My understanding of anatomy and physiology has significantly strengthened, allowing me to better anticipate patient needs and understand the rationale behind complex surgical procedures and anaesthetic techniques. I have also refined my practical skills in airway management, infection prevention and maintaining a sterile environment – all of which are fundamental to safe theatre practice.

What impact has the apprenticeship had on you so far?

Combining clinical work with developing academic skills has empowered me to take initiative and boosted my confidence.

I successfully launched a wellbeing project in my workplace, which included creating a ‘wellbeing wall’, providing sanitary boxes for changing rooms and introducing a healthy breakfast option box. I have also qualified as a mental health first aider. These initiatives led to an incredible opportunity to sit on a panel with the Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) to consult on their behaviours charter. I am now looking forward to hosting my own webinar for the AfPP next month, centred on my wellbeing project – an achievement I am immensely proud of as a student.

Tell us about the support you’ve received during your studies

The support from both the university and my employer has been exceptional. University staff have been easily accessible whenever I’ve needed guidance. Teesside has provided me with platforms to grow, such as speaking at a CPD event for nurses around human factors and wellbeing – a subject I’m truly passionate about. My lecturers have been amazing at sourcing these opportunities and helping fuel my interest in improving the healthcare workplace.

Would you recommend this course?

I would highly recommend the ODP apprenticeship at Teesside University. It offers the perfect balance of hands-on clinical experience and academic rigour. It allows you to ‘earn while you learn’, gaining real-world skills alongside a supportive and highly knowledgeable teaching team.
