Selasi's time at Teesside has led to her successfully balancing work, volunteering, business goals and studies.
Studying here has made me independent and more determined than I ever imagined.
I chose to study in the UK because the education there is globally respected and focuses on creativity, thinking, and innovation.
When I started researching Teesside University, I realised that this was more than just a university but a place that matches the digital world we live in with modern spaces, creative energy, and a real focus on future careers.
The university dream became real when I saw the Library, the digital labs, the Student Life building, and I thought this looks like a place where ideas actually come alive.
Because the world is online. I want to understand how to build brands, how to tell stories that connect with people, how to use data to make smart decisions, and how to turn likes and shares into real business results.
I love social media and creating content, so I wanted to explore how I could turn this into a real career.
It combines creativity and strategy. I like that it’s not just about posting on social media but focuses on s about understanding people, data, and impact. I enjoyed the Marketing Communications module; it helped me understand how brands speak to their audiences. I learned how to evaluate websites, study their communication style, and the challenges they face in attracting customers. I also enjoyed the Strategic Digital Marketing module, I explored big brands, such as Barclays Bank and their challenges, customer expectations and public perception.
I’ve gained skills in digital strategy, website evaluation and communication planning. As well as brand analysis and confidence in pitching ideas. Studying in the UK has made me independent and more determined than I ever imagined.
The campus is welcoming, modern, and supportive. The careers service inspires confidence by helping me with my CV, interviews and planning my future. I enjoy going to the Students’ Union as it brings the community together and a sense of belonging. But my favourite space is the Library – it’s open 24 hours with different floors for different study styles, bookable rooms and friendly staff.
I work in a care role with Comfort Call, which has taught me responsibility, empathy, and professionalism. I volunteer at the Salvation Army Donation Centre.
I’ve also been able to put the skills I’m learning into practice with my family businesses in Ghana in automobile oil, lubricants and beauty. I’ve worked on branding, communication, strategy, customer services and digital planning.
I’m balancing work, volunteering, business goals, and studies, and Teesside gives me the tools to do that.
Middlesbrough is peaceful, affordable, and perfect for students. It gives you space to focus, dream, and grow without feeling overwhelmed. It's a calm but friendly town –
a home away from home.
Yes, 100%. Teesside offers real teaching, real support, and real opportunities.
My advice to anyone thinking of studying here, would be to come open-minded and ready to learn.
Use the support services as they are life changing and balance your time but enjoy your journey.
Don’t be scared to ask questions or make mistakes.
Finally, dream big but start small, the environment here will help you grow.
I would like to expand our family businesses in Ghana into strong digital brands. I want to create online systems where customers worldwide can order our products
