What are the key ingredients of a great tale? How do you grab your reader and hold them within the suspense of your story’s unfolding events? We explore the fundamental principles of fiction and examine the ways different writers adapt and apply these techniques. Students experiment with these story-making tools and conventions to create their own unique narratives.

Poetry and popular culture

We explore examples of poets writing about popular culture and using popular culture to create character and voice – from Popeye to The Simpsons to Cardi B. Students critically and creatively analyse their position as readers of text and take part in writing exercises to encourage them to consider these ideas in their own way.
