Digital frontiers - creativity, technology and innovation

FOR POST 16 ONLY

Join us in our new digital life building to explore cutting-edge innovations in digital art, concept design, interactive media, and immersive technologies. Engage with industry professionals and university experts through hands-on workshops, live demonstrations and insightful talks.

The event will start with a talk from Deputy Head of Digital Arts and Animation Centre for Digital Innovation, Penny Holton Craig. She will share her experience with you and open your eyes to the wide range of careers within the Digital Arts.

You will then take part in two 90-minute workshops that you pre-select from the following list, all of which take place in our brand new £41.4m Digital Life Building:

3D Animation – Character Posing In this session you will be introduced to the theory behind posing a character for animation. You will then have the opportunity to create your own poses using a 3D character rig.

Concept Art - Concept Art is all about creating interesting and bespoke designs to be used in a wide range of visual media. This workshop will give you a taster of this industry, creating characters or new worlds through generated prompts giving you the experience of quickly & efficiently working to a brief.

2D Animation – Bounce into Animation! Ready to try your hand at the fundamentals of 2D animation? Join our workshop and have a go at the classic bouncing ball exercise using Toon Boom Harmony, the industry-standard 2D software! This isn't just a simple bounce; it also explores core animation principles like timing and spacing, arcs, and squash and stretch, which are essential for bringing characters to life. It's cartoony fun, incredibly satisfying to create, and the perfect easy start to your animation journey!

Stop Motion - Parkour? In this session you will learn the basics of stop motion animation. You start by creating a simple parkour obstacle course using Lego.?Once the obstacle course has been constructed you will then animate a bipedal armature figure through the course.

Visual Effects - Hulk Destruction In this workshop we will take an animated superhero character (the Hulk) and simulate him smashing through several concrete pillars. Destruction Effects are one of the most common tasks that VFX Artists undertake, and we will be using SideFX Houdini to look at the main technique that drives them: Rigid Body Dynamics!

You don't want to miss out on this insight to careers in the Digital Arts, this taster event is FREE to attend & we'll even give you lunch.
