Criminology and sociology courses reflect the human fascination with how we live our lives – no wonder they’re so popular. As a criminologist, you study crime as an individual and social phenomenon, exploring crime control and criminal justice. With sociology you examine some of the most pressing social issues facing individuals and policy makers. First-class facilities

The first-class facilities for criminology and sociology students are all on campus. The University's Library houses a large stock of books, journals and has online access to further journals and databases. Students have access to the University’s own mock court room and police station.

Criminology and sociology are based in the Clarendon Building, which has specialist teaching facilities with interactive white boards, an open-access computing laboratory and a student centre. All modules are supported with dedicated online materials, allowing you to develop your knowledge, research skills and critical thinking.

Research

Teaching in both criminology and sociology is underpinned by a strong research culture. We contribute extensively to national and international conferences, top-level peer-reviewed journals and the formulation of national policy. Staff have a variety of research interests and are members of a wide range of collaborative research groups and institutes. Teesside University is the regional base for the British Society of Criminology. Our criminology and sociology research is judged to be of international and, increasingly, world-class standing.

As a criminology or sociology graduate, you are prepared for a career in the probation service, the prison service, the police, voluntary organisations or the public sector. Further postgraduate studies are also available at the University.
