Studying as a mature student

Returning to education is a big step - but it's one that can open new doors, build confidence, and transform your future.

At Teesside University, we welcome hundreds of mature students every year. Whether you're changing career, returning to study after a break, or pursuing a lifelong passion, we help you achieve your goals.

We understand the challenges that come with studying later in life. You might be balancing work, family, or other commitments, or simply wondering what to expect. Our experienced team is here to help you settle in, build confidence, and succeed. From flexible study routes to a friendly, inclusive campus, everything we do is designed to make your return to learning as smooth as possible.

Support with every step

You have access to dedicated support before you apply and throughout your studies. Our advisers can help you:

Choose the right course for your goals

Refresh your study skills

Understand funding and finance options

Manage your time and balance commitments

Once you start your course, you find a strong network of support. You can access wellbeing services and academic guidance whenever you need it.

Flexible study options

We know that life doesn't pause when you start studying. Many of our courses offer flexible entry routes and study patterns - full-time, part-time or distance learning. If you don't yet meet the entry requirements, we have various routes which are designed to help you build skills and confidence to progress to a degree.

Funding and finance

You may be eligible for student finance even if you've studied before. Our student finance team help you explore tuition fee loans, maintenance loans, and bursaries - and show you how studying can be affordable at any age. We also offer a range of scholarships and financial support packages for eligible students, including mature learners.
