Animex – The Return

The UK’s brightest and best celebration of animation returns this January with presentations by leading animators, screenings, workshops and special displays.

Running from Tuesday 28 January to Friday 31 January 2003, Animex is organised by the University of Teesside in collaboration with Middlesbrough Council.

Tuesday 28 January – Wednesday 29 January

Animex Fringe - a mix of eclectic and brilliant happenings in and around Teesside, with an exciting array of animation displayed in and around the town centre of Middlesbrough, including:

Animex Screen – a special series of animation screenings held at a local cinema
Animex Xtreme – a showcase of bizarre, rarely seen, off-the-wall animated films
Animex Teentoons – an introduction to the joys of creating animation for young people
Animex Town – a special project for community groups to create animation of their own

The animation works created at Animex Teentoons and Animex Town will be screened during the festival

Thursday 30 January – Friday 31 January

Animex Talk! - the industry conference hosted by the University and attended by the world’s leading animators, producers and directors

One of the first confirmed speakers at Animex Talk! is Dave Throssell, a highly respected special effects expert with nearly 20 years in the business and head of Mill TV, the television arm of Oscar winning visual effects facility The Mill (see Notes for News Desks).

Dave’s previous projects include the Levis Twist and Guinness Bet on Black advertising campaigns and the BBC television series Rockface.

He will be delivering a talk on CGI crowd replication and set extension based on the work they've just completed on BBC's Pyramid. The lecture is provisionally entitled 'Four thousand geezers at Giza'.

Chris Williams, Principal Lecturer in Animation at the University of Teesside, said: “Animex is fast becoming one of the best animation festivals in the world thanks to the support of people of the calibre of Dave Throssell and the enthusiasm from the public and the industry itself. It’s a valuable industry event, giving animation professionals the opportunity to meet old friends and make new contacts. It’s also a great opportunity for the students on our animation courses to meet some of the industry’s international movers and shakers. I’m sure this year will match up to, if not exceed, the previous festivals.” Dave Throssell said: “" I'm really looking forward to Animex this year. Last time I gave a talk it was well run, well attended and I met Ray Harryhausen; what more can you ask! "
