Tim explores the world of crime

06 August 2003

Tim James has come to the University of Teesside with vast expertise in crime. But the Senior Lecturer is no law breaker. He has seven years experience as a Scene of Crime Officer, and now lecturers on the University’s BSc (Hons) degrees in Crime Scene Science and Applied Science and Forensic Investigation. In September he will take on an additional role as Course Leader for a newly launched Master of Science (MSc) degree in Forensic Investigation.

Tim, 34, is originally from the Isle of Man and has followed his father Robin into the fight against crime. Robin worked as a Policeman on the Isle of Man for 30 years, and as a prosecuting sergeant for his last nine years in the force. Tim worked first as a Scene of Crime Officer for Staffordshire Constabulary, before moving to Durham Constabulary for five-and-a-half years.

He said: “I liked Scene of Crime investigation as it was rewarding and your working situation constantly changed. When you found a piece of evidence that was pivotal to a case one way or another you could really take pride in what you were doing.”

Tim first gained a taste for teaching while on secondment with the Police’s National Training Centre in Durham. He said of his current students: “They’re from every age group and really enthusiastic about the subject. A lot of them do quote the current Crime Scene Programmes on TV as their main reason for applying, they watch the programmes and think ‘that’s really interesting’.”
