Graduation Celebrations at Teesside

18 November 2004

Over 2,000 graduates from the University of Teesside will receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates at Middlesbrough Town Hall, from Tuesday 23 to Friday 26 November, during this year’s academic awards celebrations.

They will be receiving their academic awards in person from the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Graham Henderson, on the Town Hall's main stage. Ten individual ceremonies have been organised and family members, friends and other guests will increase the numbers enjoying the celebrations to nearly 7,000. Before the first ceremony on Tuesday 23 November a procession by academic staff and members of the University's Board of Governors and Academic Board will take place, leaving the University on King Edward's Square, Middlesbrough, and along Albert Road to Middlesbrough Town Hall where the ceremonies will take place. (The procession only takes place once and leaves the University at 10.10am on Tuesday 23 November).

In addition to the thousands of graduates, five high achieving individuals will also be receiving honorary degrees on Friday 26 November at 11am. These include Emmerdale star Elizabeth Estensen, sculptor Antony Gormley OBE, Sir Liam Donaldson, the Department of Health’s Chief Medical Officer, Hollywood computer graphics maestro and Teesside graduate Andrew Lomas, and long-serving Middlesbrough Councillor Hazel Pearson OBE. The Honorary graduands will be receiving their degrees from the University Chancellor, the Rt Hon The Lord Brittan of Spennithorne. This will be Lord Brittan’s last ceremony as Chancellor, after serving 12 years in this role. The first cohorts of students will be graduating from the BSc (Hons) degree in Crime Scene Science, and from the new two year Foundation degree programmes, including Chemical Technology, Engineering, Early Years and Healthcare Sciences.
