University welcomes Olympic bid success

06 July 2005

Sport & Exercise staff at the University of Teesside have welcomed London’s successful bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games. Martin Pout, Senior Lecturer in Sport & Exercise said: “This fantastic news will not only have a huge impact for London but the country as a whole. The announcement is just the starting gun for the organisers, coaches, athletes and sport scientists that will be part of the historic games. The University of Teesside is more than geared up to be part of the games, with its £6.5 million Olympia building which includes a state-of the-art environmental chamber.”

Martin added: “The University is already at the forefront of providing sport science support to elite athletes in partnership with agencies such as the English Institute for Sport. I also anticipate a massive increase in the number of sport scientists, coaches and sport workers over the next few years as Olympic fever and preparation for the games increases. I am also sure that the University of Teesside’s Sport and Exercise graduates will have a large part to play in the preparation and build up to the games. Recent Olympic hosts have seen a dramatic increase in employment in the sport area and I am sure we will see the same in this country.”
