A first class prize donation

20 December 2007

Brian Ward graduated from the University of Teesside last year aged 68 with a first class BA (Hons) History. This year he continued his quest for knowledge by graduating with an MA History. In addition, he has donated a prize in his name to a graduating History student, which will be awarded each year.

The first recipient of the Brian Ward prize is Suzanne Pearson. Suzanne, 48, from Fairfield, Stockton, has also achieved a first class BA (Hons) History. She said: ‘I always wanted to do a History degree when I was younger but going to University wasn’t something you automatically thought about, as teenagers do now. When I got the opportunity later in life it was wonderful and the History teaching staff was so supportive, they were brilliant.

‘I was thrilled and honoured to be the first person to receive the prize. The plaque is lovely and has pride of place in my house!’

Brian, now 69, from Thornaby is a retired television engineer.  He said: ‘I had such an enjoyable time on my two degrees, donating the prize was my way of thanking the University.  Going to University had long been an ambition of mine and any reservations I had proved to be completely unfounded. I got on well with all the students and my time at University a thoroughly enjoyable experience.  I offer my congratulations to Suzanne.’
