New Executive Officers share high hopes for the future

10 September 2010

The four graduates who have been elected to lead the Students’ Union said it is an amazing feeling to be given such an opportunity.

And they can’t wait to make a real difference to the student experience at Teesside.

The new Executive Officers were elected earlier this year after over 1,100 people voted in the annual elections.

The Officers are:

  • Lori Wheatman – President
  • Philip Makinson – Education Officer
  • Tony Clapham – Student Activities Officer
  • Jenny Gill – Campaigns and Welfare Officer.

The Executive Officers have been receiving intensive training and are now working to turn their manifestos into reality.

Fellow students have put their trust in me
Lori, BA (Hons) Graphic Design, said: ‘It feels amazing to know that fellow students trust me to take the Students' Union forward. It’s very exciting to think that I may be able to make a difference, through the Students' Union, to their student experience.

‘I am so happy to be able to stay in Middlesbrough for at least another year - I love it here.’

Philip, FdA Journalism, added: ‘Over 500 students elected me and it feels quite amazing. I will not forget the feeling I had on results night for a long time to come.’

Tony Clapham, BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise (Coaching Science), has big plans for his first year in office.

He said: ‘It’s hard to pick one thing above all others but I think I would most like to unite Teesside sport, incorporating the new Teesside University brand so we create a stronger university community as a whole.’

Jenny Gill, BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy, added: ‘It feels amazing to have been elected and when I think of the many things in my manifesto that I want to achieve, I’m particularly keen to focus on the mental health of Teesside students and support them in the best way I can.’
