Past beats present

22 November 2010

Alumni from years past were victorious for the second year running in our annual tournament.

The annual battle for the past v present trophy is now in its nineteenth year and alumni and students battled through a host of sports.

Rounding off academic awards week, around 80 graduates returned to the University to participate in the tournament, facing stiff competition from the current students.

Sports included basketball, golf, hockey, badminton, rugby, netball, cricket, squash, and ten pin bowling.

A great chance to return to Teesside Mark Hawkings, head of sport and recreation, said: 'The event is a great opportunity for graduates, from as far back as 20 years ago, to return to Middlesbrough. It's a great chance to catch up socially with friends and take part in what is a very competitive sports tournament.'

This year the University is celebrating its 80th anniversary and to mark this the tournament had some extra touches this year including a commemorative t-shirt for all participants and a live band, Freeze Sucker, after the evening presentations.

The Tournament is organised by the University’s sport and well-being team in partnership with the Alumni Association and Teesside University Students’ Union.
