Spot meningitis symptoms early

22 September 2011

An awareness campaign is underway to help new and returning students spot the symptoms of meningitis early.

Meningitis Awareness Week runs from 26 – 30 September and coincides with our freshers activities at the University.

To make sure all students have access to the most up to date information, stalls will be set up in the Library and Students’ Union during the week.

Free information packs, containing an orange wristband, glass tumbler and a credit card sized symptoms card will also be handed out.

Hazel Wright, Health and Well-being coordinator, said: ‘Meningitis and septicaemia are not always easy to spot. The early signs are often similar to flu or a hangover.

‘There is a common misconception that the main symptom of meningitis is the rash. This year's campaign aims to get the message out, don't wait for the rash as the rash does not always appear. When it does, it can be one of the last symptoms to be displayed, often too late.'
