University degree offers Jackie a new career direction

16 November 2012

Gaining a first class degree from Teesside University gave Jackie Briggs the confidence and self-belief to pursue a new career opportunity.

Having worked in an administrative role within the health sector for a number of years, Jackie decided to study BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy as she believed it would give her the opportunity to take her career to the next level.

She graduates with first class honours and is already putting her new-found knowledge into practice, working as a Health Link Coordinator for Age UK Teesside.

Jackie, 43, is based in Middlesbrough but works across the Teesside area. She is currently leading a project called ‘Fit as a Fiddle’ which involves promoting physical, emotional and mental well-being to the over 50s through a range of activities such as exercise, bowls and lunch clubs.

'I have only been in my new role since June but I am really enjoying it,' said Jackie.

'Studying at Teesside University gave me a new direction in life and I now have much more ambition and belief in myself and my ability.

'The best thing about the course was being able to challenge myself and discovering I was able to do more than I ever thought I could.'

Jackie, who lives in Redcar, had to balance the demands of a degree with family life.

She added: 'I am married with two children so it was difficult fitting everything in, but my family were very supportive.

'I think studying for a degree has even inspired my kids a little bit as they seem to be doing even better at school.'

Speaking about graduation Jackie added: 'I am ecstatic to be graduating as it means all my hard work has truly paid off. I would definitely recommend Teesside University – it has provided me with so many fantastic opportunities.'
