Senior industry figures to attend region’s first ever aviation conference

12 January 2023

Leading figures from the UK’s airline and travel industries are speaking at the Tees Valley’s first ever aviation conference, which is being organised by Teesside University.

The Teesside University Inaugural Aviation Conference takes place from 16-20 January and brings together a host of senior leaders from the world of air travel to discuss some of the key issues facing the industry.

The free conference has been organised by academics at Teesside University International Business School, which offers a range of undergraduate and postgraduate courses in aviation and tourism.

It has been designed to bring academics, industry specialists and professionals from the UK aviation industry together to discuss new and emerging topics within the current aviation landscape.

Issues for discussion include space exploration, marketing priorities, customer experience, safety challenges, sustainability objectives and Net Zero debates.

Primarily aimed at aviation students and those seriously considering a career in the industry, the conference will also appeal to industry professionals who are interested in learning more about the sector and to network with peers.

The key speakers represent a range of organisations including several UK airports including Teesside International, Edinburgh, Leeds Bradford and Newcastle airports as well as Spaceport Cornwall, Zero Avia, International Fire Training Centre, Serco, Securicare and several leading airlines.

One day of the event will be dedicated to the developments taking place at Teesside International Airport, including its terminal transformation and operations.

More than 40 students, academics and delegates will learn first-hand about the airport’s cargo and passenger offering, plus how businesses based on the site – aviation firms Willis Aviation Services Limited and Draken Europe – are growing to meet the sector’s demands and creating careers.

This conference will provide opportunities to explore research concepts, network with professionals and experts from the UK aviation sector, collaborate with peers and discover career-elevating conversations.

Susannah Mead, conference organiser

The conference organiser Susannah Mead, a Lecturer in Airline/Airport Management, at Teesside University International Business School, said: “This conference is a first for the region and I’m really excited to see such an interesting line-up of speakers who will be able to give a real insight into the aviation industry.

“We’re delighted that we can offer access to this conference not just to our students and those of our partner further education colleges, but also to anyone who might be interested in a career in the aviation industry or with an interest in the sector.

“We are confident that this conference will provide opportunities to explore research concepts, network with professionals and experts from the UK aviation sector, collaborate with peers and discover career-elevating conversations.”

Teesside Airport’s Managing Director, Phil Forster, said: “As an airport we’re going from strength to strength and this conference has allowed us to get the message out that there’s a raft of opportunity right here on people’s doorsteps.

“From passenger travel and freight to maintenance and development of the sustainable aviation fuel of tomorrow, exciting things are happening on Teesside. We are delighted to be welcoming delegates to highlight the progress we’ve made and hopefully inspire the next generation of aviation workers.”
