International students broaden horizons with virtual exchange

A trio of Teesside University students who took part in a virtual exchange with a university in Finland have shared how the opportunity has broadened their horizons while boosting their employability.

Chinomnso Ehiudo, Joseph Oyekanmi and Faith Nteogwuija successfully applied to take one of three places on a three-month module which included a virtual exchange programme with Haaga-Helia University in Finland.

Teesside University International Business School students could apply to complete online modules in AI in Business, E-Business in Tourism and Hospitality, or Responsible Space Tourism, to help broaden their learning experience while helping to boost skills in communication and time-management.

Chinomnso, 32, from Nigeria, completed the E-Business in Tourism and Hospitality module as part of the Master of Business Administration (Applied). She said: “The module involved lectures on innovative ways to connect diverse people globally. One way is digital marketing. I enjoyed the concepts of digital marketing especially in drafting a digital marketing plan.

“As a Business Administration student, I know that information diversification plays an important role in my learning journey. This programme has broadened my knowledge and working experiences with e-business.

“I choose the MBA to develop my management skills and learn innovative ways to run a sustainable business. I chose Teesside University as it provides structured training for students through focused teaching and above all, facilitates networking opportunities to career advancement.”

Faith Nteogwuija, 28, from Nigeria, who is completing the MSc International Management (Digital Business), said: “I had a background in e-commerce back in Nigeria and I thought it would be great learning about logistics and supply chain management as these were issues which I battled with while running an e-commerce store in Nigeria.

“I really enjoyed learning the various logistics terms and issues. Receiving personalised feedback also made the programme worth it. It has helped me to understand the intricacies of something I previously had challenges with and would help me if I had future involvement in an e-commerce business again.”

Faith added: “I have been immersed in digital since starting my degree, from blog writing to search engine optimisation, marketing and running an e-commerce store. Progressing through this module would help to provide more prospects.”

Joseph Oyekanmi, 38, from Nigeria, is completing the Master of Business Administration (Applied) and completed the Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Business.

“The module contents were relevant to current realities in the business world. I also enjoyed the self-learning system of the program as it allows for flexibility in my study times, and I was able to plan and allocate time for my studies independently,” said Joseph.

“The programme will help me in my future career. It has already helped me in deciding on the topic for my MBA dissertation, which will focus on digital transformation in organizations. Through my studies during the exchange programme, I was able to discover areas of research which does not only add to my knowledge, but also improve the quality of my research work.

“I chose the MBA to improve my management and leadership skills and boost my career with a degree from an international business school. My aim is to teach management, leadership, accounting, and finance at higher institutions of learning.

“The support system within the University has been very helpful. Particularly, library support and the student futures team.”

“We work with our international partners to offer international opportunities to our students from a month-long placement to virtual modules, these programmes allow students to improve their intercultural and employability skills.”
