Super Suzanne is flying high

26 November 2001

Legal eagle Suzanne Farr is certainly flying high. For the University of Teesside graduate has achieved a First Class LLB (Hons) degree and clinched a contract to train as a Solicitor with Eversheds, staring in October 2002. In addition to these achievements, Suzanne has also received two academic prizes, The Waterstone Prize, awarded for the best seven foundation subjects, and the Butterworth John Buckley-Atkins Memorial Prize, awarded for outstanding application of legal skills.

Suzanne, 21, from Guisborough is now studying for a Legal Practice qualification in York, which will qualify her as a trainee solicitor. She came to the University with three good ‘A’ levels in English Language, Psychology and French from South Park Sixth Form College.

She said: “I’ve always wanted to study Law, I saw it as a subject where I could really push myself. I chose Teesside as I wanted to stay local and several of my good friends were already studying there. On the course I really enjoyed exploring land law, it was very complex and we looked at who has property rights over other people. It was fascinating to strip away the layers of legislation. I also enjoyed looking at company and corporate insolvency, it was interesting to learn about new systems and see how they were put into practice.”

Suzanne also enjoyed team and individual success in the North-East Inter-Varsity mooting League competition. The annual mock trial event pits teams of North-East University law students against each other, where they are judged on a range of skills, including development of legal argument and their knowledge and application of law. Suzanne was part of the winning team in 1999, beating the Universities of Durham, Newcastle and Northumbria. In the following year Suzanne won the best individual student prize.

“Gaining the individual prize wasn’t as satisfying as the team victory the year before. There was a real sense of camaraderie, we were very much the underdogs when we went into the competition, and it felt so good to win and gave me such confidence, ” added Suzanne.

Suzanne is the daughter of Ken and Hazel Farr.
