Teesside is a top scorer in Sport Science

19 December 2001

The University of Teesside’s Sport & Exercise teaching section has scored an impressive 21 out of 24 in a review of its work by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA).

The subject review assessed six course areas - with a maximum possible score of 4 in each of the areas. The QAA team gave 4 out of 4 for three areas. These were: Learning Resources; Student Support and Guidance; and Student Progression and Achievement and 3 out of 4 in Curriculum Design, Content and Organisation; Quality Management & Enhancement; and Teaching, Learning and Assessment.

The review highlighted a series of strengths, including the young, enthusiastic, caring and committed staff team; the clear, appropriate teaching strategies and good student feedback processes; and the enthusiasm of the current students and the supportive comments of former students.

Professor Graham Henderson, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Development) said: “Recognising that Sport is a relatively new discipline within the University, this represents an excellent outcome. In providing feedback, the Review Chair commented that the attitude and approach of the team was ‘as good as it gets’, describing them as ‘a model of a team’.”

Professor Tim Blackman, Director of the School of Social Sciences and Law, said: “We aim to provide high quality student support that contributes to the University’s mission of widening access and offering students the opportunity to reach their full potential. This outcome demonstrates that we are succeeding.”

Jocelyn Appleton, Field Leader for Sport & Exercise at the University said: “This is a great achievement, and reflects the hard work and commitment of the Sport and Exercise staff. We are eagerly looking forward to the future and to the delivery of a comprehensive range of courses that includes an HND, five degree routes and a new Master’s degree in Sport & Exercise.”
