Designs of the future on display

21 May 2002

Where can you find a wearable communications system? An artist’s studio for the outdoors? A Thai cultural centre? Or a Down’s Syndrome awareness campaign? Innovative designs for these and many more projects will be on display at the University of Teesside’s annual Design Degree Show. The show is open from 10am – 4pm on Thursday 6 June – Friday 7 June and again from Monday 10 June – Wednesday 12 June at the Centre North East, formerly Corporation House, Albert Road, Middlesbrough (opposite Middlesbrough Town Hall).

The show will display final-year students’ work from the following University of Teesside BA (Honours) degrees: Design Marketing, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture & Design.

Among the works on show will be a project by BA (Honours) Graphic Design student Emma Jameson. Emma, 21, from Peterlee, has designed an identity for a fictitious Sushi bar. It’s been a busy year for Emma, in addition to designing the bar’s identity she has also clinched £250 for third place in a national book design competition and designed a poster to publicise the degree show across the region. Her poster was selected from 50 student entries.

Emma won third place in the Macmillan children’s book competition in May. Her entry evolved over two months, and focused on ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’. Emma has produced her own illustrated version of the story, placing an emphasis on scale by contrasting images of Jack with the giant.

Emma said: “I selected ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ as it’s a story that everybody knows, I remember it well from my days at infants school. I was so pleased to win; I couldn’t believe it and I’ll be spending the money on a summer holiday. The skills I’ve learned during my three-year course at Teesside helped me to succeed. Undertaking projects in design areas such as typography, illustration and multimedia has given me a vision for the future.”
