Meteor strikes for the Fourth time!

12 June 2002

Over 700 local primary school pupils will arrive at the University of Teesside from Monday 17 June - Friday 28 June, to take part in the fourth Meteor Summer School.

Teesside launched the Meteor programme in 1999, initially involving six primary schools in central Middlesbrough. It aims to raise the aspirations of pupils, aged 10 and above, by inviting them into the University for a series of short taster activities, including science and computing. Student mentors then work in schools with the pupils throughout the year, prior to the two - week Summer School that involves a wider range of activities. This year's Summer School has the largest number of pupils taking part so far. It will end in two special mini-graduation ceremonies for all pupils at Middlesbrough Town Hall. The graduations will take place on Friday 28 June at 10am and 1pm. The pupils will process from the University down Albert Road to the Town Hall at 9.40am and 12.40pm.

Meteor has expanded with new pupils each year, and now involves 18 primary and 12 secondary schools. This year's activities include:

Drama workshops.
Artwork, with silkscreen printing and creating individual greeting cards.
Exploring the world of Virtual Reality.
Egyptian poetry.
Team building with the Army.
Forensic investigation.

No Meteor activities will take place on Friday 21 June and Thursday 27 June. If the media wish to attend any of the Meteor events, please contact the Press & Public Relations Office on 01642 342015, fax 01642 342930, e-mail pr@tees.ac.uk
