Andrew enjoys a nutritious food award

22 November 2002

University of Teesside graduate Andrew Sayer is celebrating after earning an Academic prize in addition to his First Class Honours degree.

Andrew, 22, has lived most of his life on his parents’ farm in Brompton-on-Swale, Richmond, leading to an interest in food production and processing. Taking a place on the University’s BSc (Hons) Food Science & Nutrition course was the next step. Now Andrew’s commitment and hard work paid off with the degree and the Institute of Food Science & Technology Award.

When asked about his success on the course and winning the award, Andrew said: “I’m over the Moon! At the end of my second year, it looked like I was going to get a 2:2, so after taking a year out to do a placement at Kookaburra’s sandwich factory in Peterlee, I really knuckled down and worked hard. It’s paid off now and I also think it shows how useful a work placement can be as well. It gave me a chance to put what I learned in a practical context at same time as providing me with some genuinely relevant work experience for when I start applying for jobs in the food industry.”

Andrew, who’s dissertation examined the long term effects of the recent Foot and Mouth disease outbreak, has followed his first degree with an MSc in Food Technology at the University.
