New Vice-Chancellor for the University of Teesside

Professor Graham Henderson has been appointed as the new Vice-Chancellor of the University of Teesside.

Currently Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Development) at the University of Teesside, Professor Henderson will take over at the helm of the Middlesbrough-based university when Professor Derek Fraser retires at the end of March, 2003.

Professor Henderson said: “I am both immensely proud and greatly honoured to have been offered the position of Vice-Chancellor and to follow Professor Derek Fraser, who has done such an outstanding job over the last decade to create our dynamic, thriving modern University. My appointment comes at a time of significant change in higher education and I am looking forward immensely to continuing to work with our talented body of staff and students and our many partners. I am equally looking forward to meeting new partners and developing new projects and alliances to extend the reputation and contribution of the University within the Tees Valley, the North East and beyond”.

Mr John Hackney, Chairman of the Board of Governors, said “I am delighted to announce that the Board of Governors of the University of Teesside has appointed Professor Graham Henderson as Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive of the University with effect from 1 April 2003. Professor Henderson has been a huge success in his present position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic and Development) and he will lead the University into the future with skill, drive and imagination”.

Born in the Newcastle on 23 August 1952, Professor Henderson is married to Joan and lives in Guisborough. He has three children Nicola, Robert and Michael.

He was appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Development) at the University of Teesside in 1999 after two years at Sunderland University, where he was Director of the Business School. Before that he worked for 17 years at Northumbria University. He was Assistant Director of Newcastle Business School before moving to Sunderland. Before joining academia, he worked as a trainee accountant with the National Coal Board before winning an NCB scholarship to study for a Mathematics degree at Coventry in 1975. He went on to gain a MSc in Applied Statistics and Operational Research from City University, London.
