Free public lecture on changes to Sexual Offences Bill 2003

26 February 2003

The University of Teesside’s Centre for Applied Socio-Legal Studies (CASLS) is hosting a free public lecture entitled Prostitution and Sexual Exploitation: Changes by the Sexual Offences Bill 2003 by Alisdair Gillespie. Alisdair, a senior lecturer at CASLS, is a nationally recognised expert in the subject of child protection and Internet grooming and is also a member of a Government’s Task Force investigating the issue of child abuse on the Internet.

The seminar will be in Room A1.061, First Floor of the University's School of Social Sciences' Clarendon Building, off Southfield Road, Middlesbrough (near the Dicken's Inn) on Wednesday 12 March at 6pm.

Alisdair said: "I will be discussing the proposals contained in the Sexual Offences Bill 2003 relating to prostitution and sexual exploitation. The new Bill is a welcome and much needed overhaul of the archaic laws relating to sexual offences in England and Wales, and is the culmination of several years work and consultation."

Topics to be discussed on the night include:
Offences relating to child prostitution
Offences relating to the sexual exploitation of adults and children
Offences relating to the encouragement of child procurement for child pornography or sexual exploitation
The place of pornography in sexual exploitation
Trafficking of humans

The seminar is open to members of the University (both staff and students), together with members of the public, social services, police officers, and other public and private sector bodies who work with sex workers.

People wishing to attend the free seminar can book their place by contacting Judy Flynn, CASLS Assistant Administrator, on 01642 342333, or by email: j.flynn@tees.ac.uk
