Irene’s route to success

13 March 2003

Mother of three Irene Nimmo is celebrating after earning two University Certificates in Professional Development (UCPD) from the University of Teesside, and is now studying part-time for a degree in Business Management.

After completing two UCPD courses (one in Third Sector Organisations, which taught her about the role and management of voluntary groups and the other in Human Resource Management), Irene decided to continue her development by enrolling on the BA (Hons) in Business Management.

Irene said: “My life has turned around since I began the courses. I was volunteering at the Middlesbrough Mind, a charity that helps people with mental ill health, when I had the opportunity to take part in a University of Teesside UCPD course in Third Sector Organisations. I did the course at the North Ormesby Community Centre and followed it up with a Human Resource Management course at the University. And now I’m doing a degree!

“The UCPD system is a great way to get back into education. It eases you back into studying and gives you the skills and background knowledge you need to go onto to further study.”

Irene will graduate from the UCPD in Human Resource Management on Wednesday 19 March at the University of Teesside’s Main Hall in the Middlesbrough Tower, Borough Road, Middlesbrough, at 6.30pm.
