England on Film Archive Screening

24 March 2003

When BBC Two needed local television footage for its upcoming England on Film series, they knew where to come – the Northern Region Film & Television Archive, part of which is based at the University of Teesside.

An environmentally controlled building holding thousands of hours of local news, documentary and even home-movie footage, the Northern Region Film & Television Archive has provided approximately an hour’s worth of film for the three-part series. Footage supplied by the archive includes a 1913 Newcastle v Sunderland football derby and various World War II related clips such as the bombing of South Shields in 1941 and a colour home-movie shot by a Middlesbrough dentist during a trip to Nazi Germany in 1937.

England on Film will be broadcast on BBC Two, at 7.30pm, on Thursday 20 March, Thursday 27 March and Monday 3 April.

Dr Leo Enticknap, Director of the Northern Region Film & Television Archive, said: “Television programmes like England on Film is one of the reasons why the archive was this created. It’s an invaluable source of regional film footage and we were of course very pleased to help the BBC with this project. I hope people enjoy seeing some of the images of our region from yester-year.”

David Lewis, BBC executive producer of England on Film, said: “There are moments in the films that will make you laugh out loud - and there are other moments that will have you shedding tears - the whole range of emotions that make up life are there.”

The Northern Region Film & Television Archive was opened in 2002 and is based at the University of Teesside. Organisations or film makers wishing to find out more about the archive can contact Dr Leo Enticknap on 01642 384022, e-mail: l.enticknap@tees.ac.uk
