Pupils program University robots

21 May 2003

Year 10 pupils (aged 14-15) from Carmel School, Darlington, will be exploring the world of robotics at the University of Teesside on Wednesday 20 May. The pupils are visiting the University as part of a wider programme of activities organised through the Tees Valley Engineering Partnership. The programme aims to show the varied applications of engineering. In addition to the University, the pupils have visited several local engineering firms, including Huntsman and Kvaerner.

At the University, the pupils will learn how to program robots to carry out simple tasks, and discover the range and number of appliances that use this technology.

Julie Mennell, Assistant Director in the School of Science & Technology said: “This is a tremendous opportunity for students to gain an insight into engineering, from mechanical and process, to construction, electronic and control. I’m sure they will have their eyes opened to an exciting range of careers opportunities in engineering.”
