Samantha scoops design success

06 August 2003

Samantha Allinson had little time for relaxation after finishing her BA (Hons) degree in Design Marketing at the University of Teesside. For Samantha, 21, from Nunthorpe, started her new post as a packaging designer with Avro OEM in Stainton, a public relations and marketing firm straight after completing her course.

Samantha came to the University after achieving three 'A' levels in Business Studies, Design Technology and Maths at St. Mary's College in Middlesbrough.

She said: “A friend was already at the University studying Design Marketing and I really, really wanted to do the course. I learned so much in my first year, not only technical skills in the workshop but also delivering presentations to my peers and tutors. I was so frightened initially about presentations, but now I feel confident doing them and ready for the outside world."

For her final year project Samantha devised a promotional campaign for Boots' 'First Course' range of baby and child foods. Her campaign included colour co-ordinated foods for different age ranges, a direct mail out to mothers, and specific material for mothers on the Internet. Samantha said: "My project research revealed that a lot of mothers are looking for parental advice on the Internet, it's a massive change. I'd love to see my campaign taken up in the future."

Samantha clinched her post through the University's Bridges & Routes scheme, an initiative part-financed by the European Social Fund. Through the scheme graduates are placed with a local employer, gaining valuable skills and earning a training allowance of £125 per week. Samantha's introduction to Avro OEM, via Bridges and Routes, led to her new post.

Samantha added: "Bridges & Routes provided me with that all important foot in the door. My parents Josephine and Keith love it that I've got a job straight from finishing the degree. I've had the opportunity to do so many things, such as exploring advertising, and improving my computer skills. That's why I got this job, as I have marketing and practical design knowledge."

University is a family affair for Samantha, as her older brother Kevin, 23, will complete his Masters Degree in Multi-Media at Teesside this year, and both graduate in November.
