A blazing lesson for Teesside students

10 December 2003

Crime Scene Science students at the University of Teesside will experience arson at first hand tomorrow, when they photograph burning and burnt-out vehicles. The exercise has been organised by Cleveland Police and Fire Brigade, and gives 60 first year students on the BSc (Hons) Crime Scene Science degree an invaluable practical demonstration of arson and its effects on vehicles.

The demonstration will take place at Centex, a garage services company, at Puddler’s Lane, Southbank, Middlesbrough. There will be an opportunity to photograph the students with the vehicles from 2pm to 3pm at Centex, on Wednesday 10 December Puddler’s Lane, Southbank. Fire engines will also be present at Centex.

Peter Beveridge, Senior Lecturer in Crime Scene Science said: “It’s the first time we’ve done an outside exercise like this. The vehicles have been recovered by the Police for a range of reasons, such as not being taxed or being abandoned and unroadworthy. Our students can photograph the vehicles in a real environment, as opposed to somewhere sterile.”
