An inspirational lecturer remembered

19 December 2003

A pair of University of Teesside graduates have paid tribute to an inspirational lecturer after achieving a special academic prize awarded in his name.

The Steve Baldwin Memorial Prize is awarded in memory of psychology lecturer Professor Steve Baldwin who was killed in the Selby train crash of February 2001. Donated by his family, the prize is available only to students who studied under Steve.

Catherine Nixon, from Guisborough, who achieved a First Class degree in BSc (Hons) Psychology & Counselling and Suzanne Day, from Hartlepool, 2:11 in BSc (Hons) Psychology with Sociology, were both Steve’s students during their first year at Teesside.

Catherine, who is planning to continue with her studies by taking a Masters course, said: “Steve Baldwin had a real presence and at the same time he was very approachable and friendly. I’m very honoured to win an award in his name and it’s made my graduation even more special.”

Suzanne said: “This course is one of the best things I’ve ever done and I’m over the moon to win an award that remembers Steve. He was an inspirational lecturer and really knew how to hold an audience’s attention. He taught me in my first year here, and I’ve never forgot any of the lectures.”
