Deborah’s new post

19 December 2003

From the post office to social work - mature student Deborah Atkinson has graduated with a BA (Hons) Social Work Studies degree and was also named as the ‘Best Overall Student’ on her course at the University of Teesside.

The former post-delivery person has also landed a new job with the Community Mental Health Team in Bishop Aukland.

Speaking after her graduation ceremony, mother-of-two Deborah, 35, from Hurworth in County Durham, said: “The course was excellent and I really enjoyed it. After 12 years of delivering the mail every morning, it was a real change to go into full-time study. I made lots of friends who I know I’ll stay in touch with and I found the whole place very supportive with a great atmosphere.

“During my final year I worked part-time with a Forensic Social Work Team with mentally disordered criminals. It was difficult to combine work, study and two children but was well worth it. Winning the award was great - it’s always nice to have your work recognised.”

Deborah’s role with the Community Mental Health Team sees her asses the levels of care offered to people with mental health problems living in the community and ensuring they receive the help they require.

With two children, Jessica, 11, and Emma, eight, keen jogger Deborah is the first in her family to graduate from University.
