Second chance to time travel

08 March 2004

Following the success of a recent screening of films about the region’s history, the University of Teesside is repeating them to give a second chance to those who missed the films the first time around.

The Middlesbrough on Film screening shows films which capture key periods of Middlesbrough’s past and begin at 2pm on Wednesday 24 March. It will be shown in the University's Constantine Cinema (formerly called the main lecture theatre) in the Constantine Building, which is adjoined to the Middlesbrough Tower. Ask at the Middlesbrough Tower reception for directions to the cinema.

Middlesbrough on Film features films about daily life in Middlesbrough throughout the last century. The films range from the early colour home movies, industrial footage of steelmaking in the 1930s, news reports about local residents fight to stop the razing of the housing on Cannon Street and a grisly unsolved murder at a Middlesbrough carpet shop.

It will be hosted by Leo Enticknap, film historian and lecturer in Media Studies at the University.

Patricia Zakreski, film access and education officer at the University, said: “Our first Middlesbrough on Film on was very popular so we decided to run the films again for people who couldn’t make it the first time around. It’s a great chance to learn more about local history and you never know, you might see someone you recognise!”

The film show, which is being organised by the University of Teesside, draws on films from the Northern Region Film & Television Archive (NRFTA). The NRFTA stores thousands of hours of TV footage filmed all over the north, including an extensive collection of BBC and Tyne Tees newsreels, home movies from amateur film-makers and corporate videos and training films from some of the big companies in and around the area. It is an invaluable resource for local historians, filmmakers, and members of the public.
