Capturing home on camera

06 April 2004

The University of Teesside is inviting school children from across the Tees Valley to enter a photography competition to capture what ‘home’ means to them.

The competition is part of a conference called ‘A Place to Call Home: Making connections between people, households, neighbourhoods, communities and cities’. The two-day conference takes place from Monday 19 -Tuesday 20 July 2004, and will feature a talk by John McCarthy, the former Lebanon hostage, will explore the impact of social change on home life.

Dr Tony Chapman, Assistant Director of School of the University’s Social Sciences & Law, said: “We want entrants to capture in photographs why the Tees Valley is home to them. They need to think about home in the broadest possible sense to include particular places that are important to them, like homes and gardens, shops, playgrounds or schools, or panoramic townscapes, suburban scenes, industrial landscapes or rural locations.” The competition is open to Year 7 - 9 (11-14 years old) children in the Tees Valley. Each of the best five entries will receive a digital camera for their school. The competition is sponsored by Regeneration Exchange and the closing date for entries is Friday 4 June.

The Place Called Home conference is hosted by the Social Futures Institute at the University of Teesside, Monday 19 -Tuesday 20 July 2004.
