New Forensic course for professionals

26 April 2004

A new degree course specifically for working Crime Scene Investigators is being launched by the University of Teesside in May.

The BSc (Hons) Forensic Investigation degree is designed to further a Crime Scene Investigator’s understanding of the processes applied to evidence both at the crime scene and back in the laboratory. The four modules that make up the course are: Crime Scene Surveying & Plan Drawing, Analysis & Investigation of Fire Scenes, Forensic Analysis and Managing a Major Crime Scene. An individual dissertation focussed on the workplace is also required.

Ian Pepper, Senior Lecturer and former Crime Scene Investigator and Fingerprint Officer with West Yorkshire Police, said: “The main benefit of taking part in this course is one of personal professional development. The Crime Scene Investigator will go from a Diploma in Crime Scene Examination, or similar, to a degree and will be in an even stronger position to carry out their role. We have already had interest from several Police Forces and as a former Crime Scene Investigator myself, I know how useful I would have found this course.”

The BSc (Hons) Forensic Investigation requires each participant to attend approximately one week of intensive lecturers and practical sessions for each module. Course fees are £250 per module, plus £500 for the dissertation.
