John’s degree is the business

John Bourner had little time for relaxation after finishing his BA (Hons) degree in Business Studies at the University of Teesside. He applied for a new post as a Recruitment Officer for a local nursing agency in May, was offered the job in the same month, and started work one week after leaving University.

John, 22, from Middlesbrough, came to the University with three A levels in Business Studies, English Language and Media Studies from St. Mary’s Sixth Form. He said: “I chose to continue Business Studies at degree level as it offered a broad overview of all business elements, the variety really appealed. Having the opportunity to spend your third year in industry was particularly attractive, as you’re getting valuable experience compared to other graduates and the chance to relate your theory to a practical setting.”

John enjoyed the course’s mix of business modules. He said: “I liked the Human Resource Management elements, looking at what motivates people at work, what people get out of their jobs and different methods of management in small businesses and bigger corporations. International Business was also enjoyable, where we explored new legislation from the European Union.

“I spent my industrial year working as an Accounts Administrator for Stiller’s Transport in Stockton. It was invaluable, as I got to work in a team, look at different areas and built up a network of friends. It also helped for my final year at University, when I had specific examples to back up the theory.”

It wasn’t all work and no play for John, as he completed a concert and CD reviews for the Student’s Union magazine. He said: “Being able to write reviews was brilliant, something I’ve been into since school. I’ve always liked music and cinema so enjoyed the chance to get some recognition.”

John has recently joined the Phoenix Nursing Agency in Middlesbrough as a Recruitment Officer. He saw the post advertised in the University’s Careers Department. The agency recruits nurses and care assistants for care homes and private hospitals throughout the North-East. John added: “It was such a weight off my mind to get the job so quickly, as my girlfriend is studying Nursing at Teesside and we have a two-and-a half year old son. I’d recommend the degree to anyone who wants to get broad experience of all business areas. The lectures are brilliant and the University’s Learning Resource Centre has excellent facilities, particularly with Internet access.”
