Top tips for students during Clearing

25 August 2000

Students who find themselves in the Clearing system after they get their A’level results were advised today to have a plan of action to help get them through the next few days and on to the right course.

Juliet Walters, head of the Academic Registry at the University of Teesside, which handles student admissions, said: “There will be a wide range of courses with places available during Clearing and advice is always at hand, even if students are undecided about which course to do.

“Students can either ring the Registry on 01642 384228 for some general advice and guidance or contact the subject areas directly, via the main switchboard, on 01642 218121. You can even ring on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 August between 10am-4pm.”

Juliet encourages applicants to ask themselves a few basic questions, such as:- · Do I want to move away from home or go to my local university? · Do I only want to study the subject or subjects on my UCAS form? · Do I want to change direction from Arts to Engineering or vice-versa? · Would I consider new degree or HND courses? · Will I accept an alternative HND or Foundation Degree course if I can’t go straight on to an honours degree with my A’level results?

Foundation degrees are one year courses that students can undertake before embarking on a full honours or HND Science or Engineering course if they don’t have the appropriate Science or Maths A’levels or GNVQ results.

New courses at the University of Teesside have the advantage of being bang up-to-date and often have places available. Among new course areas at Teesside are Computer Animation, Media Technology/Production, Telecommunication & Digital Broadcasting, Human Biology, Computer-Aided Design Engineering, Forensic Investigation, Public Relations, Retail/Direct Marketing, Tourism Management, Learning Disabilities/Nursing/Social Work and Sports Therapy.

The University also introduced a BA (Hons) Media Studies degree last year and from this September is offering a new two-year HND in Journalism, to be taught at Darlington College of Technology which has an enviable reputation for print and radio journalism training. Also new is an innovative HND Music Technology, which will be taught at Teesside Tertiary College.
