Teesside celebrates student employment record

23 December 2004

There’s good news for University of Teesside graduates, according to new government statistics.

Performance Indicators have been released by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) showing what graduates are doing six months after completing their courses. The indicators reveal that 93 per cent of first degree, full-time University of Teesside graduates in 2003 were either in employment or further study. This total is up one per cent on the previous year and achieves the performance benchmark set for the University.

Bill Greenwood, Head of the University of Teesside’s Careers Service said: "This is further confirmation that study at Teesside is opening up real opportunities for our graduates."

One University of Teesside graduate who has reason to celebrate is Laura Smyrell, a BA (Hons) Human Resource Management graduate who is working as a Tesco management trainee.

Laura, 25, from Yarm, clinched her post following a rigorous recruitment process, which saw 4,500 graduates chasing 44 places. Laura said: “The University’s lecturers have a real passion for their subject and a very practical background, which they bring into the lectures. You get to understand the whole world of business, including economics and business organisation. I have the skills to see the bigger picture, how Human Resources can drive the business.”
