Learning Resource Centre back in action

12 January 2005

The University of Teesside’s Learning Resource Centre was back in action today (12 January, 2005) after being closed for three days following storm damage at the weekend.

High winds took part of the roof off the building, which houses the library and computer work stations, on the early hours of Saturday morning.

Estates personnel worked with University Health & Safety experts and contractors to secure the building in central Middlesbrough and make the main library facilities water-tight.

Repairs to the top floor, which houses the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, will take longer to repair and the Vice-Chancellor’s Executive has relocated to the Centre for Enterprise on the University campus.

Temporary alternative arrangements have been made to ensure that students are not penalised as a result of the closure or unduly affected by the on-going repair work.

After talks with the Students’ Union, it has been agreed to a seven day extension for all in-course assessments due to be submitted before the end of January.

Mr Ian Butchart, Director of Library & Information Services, said: “We are fortunate that the damage was restricted to the top floor and that none of the books or computers were damaged. I am very pleased that we have been able to re-open so quickly. Normal opening hours apply.”

However, the Saltersgill Sports Ground will be out of action until further notice.
