Bursary success is par for golfing student

16 August 2000

James Harper would be the first to disagree with the old adage that golf was a good walk spoilt.

For the 22-year-old student at the University of Teesside is one of the first recipients of a golf bursary from the Royal & Ancient Governing Body of Golf.

James is a final year BEng (Hons) Design Engineering student at Teesside with a scratch handicap. He has represented the Northern Universities Team, been selected for the British Universities Team and is awaiting selection for the Palmer Cup, the university equivalent of the Ryder Cup which takes place in Ireland this summer.

James started playing golf when his dad brought home a golf club for him at the age of 11. James said: "My dad and I started playing golf at the same time but I think I've taken to it slightly better than he has - my dad has a handicap of 12 and mine is only a scratch.

"I've managed to combine my studies and my hobby and am pleased to have my degree qualification to fall back on."
