The figures released today (Thursday 17 February, 2005) by the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) show that by the advisory closing date of 15 January, a total of 8,833 home applications had been received by the Middlesbrough-based university, compared with 7,957 at the same time last year.
Professor Graham Henderson, the University’s Vice-Chancellor, said: “The application figures are very encouraging for the 2005-06 academic year. I believe they reflect our innovative programme of new course development, our investment in our campus and our key focus on the whole student experience”.
The Teesside figure is above the national average increase of 9.6% in applications for degrees starting in September.
The biggest percentage increase for courses at Teesside are for Design, including Computer Art (applications up 41.7%); Electronic and Electrical Engineering (up 30.4%); Sociology (up 25.5%), Psychology (up 18.09%) ; Law (applications up 16.8%); Marketing and Public Relations (up 14.81%) and Sport & Exercise (up by 14.3%).
Kathryn Turnbull, Academic Registrar at the University of Teesside, said: “We are delighted by the rise in applications to degree courses and to see that the message is getting across to more and more students that this is a great place to study.”
